E-Commerce is growing exponentially as advances in SME technology, shipping internet accessibility allow consumers to purchase online with ease and confidence. Online buying is increasing by 10 percent annually, on average. But which are leading the way as the top 3 e-commerce companies out there today?

Rakuten is based in Japan and is not only leading e-commerce there, but is also one of the largest retailers in the United States, Canada, Spain, and the United Kingdom. They have expanded from online shopping to banking services, brokerage services, professional sports team management, and travel. Most recently, Rakuten purchased the e-book hosting service and marketplace OverDrive, originally headquartered in the United States.

Alibaba is the world's largest e-commerce market as of April 2016.  The Chinese corporation hosts Alibaba.com, TaoBao, and Tmall which together serve million of both merchants and shoppers. Alibaba utilizes web portals, which collect information from numerous sources, to facilitate consumer to consumer, business to business, and business to consumer sales. They have also expanded into hosting electronic sales, sales-based search engines, and cloud computing systems. This diversification has led to $248 billion dollars in sales last year, which is more than Amazon and EBay combined.

Amazon holds the number one position in e-commerce in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany. Despite a nearly 200 billion dollar difference between Amazon and Alibaba, the company continues to grow in leaps and bounds with developments such as free, fast shipping, brand recognition, and user confidence, as Amazon was among the first e-commerce giants in places such as Canada, where options were, for a time, rather limited.
