Imagine a not too distant future where the concept of night and day won't mean anything to the ability to ship an important item. Imagine a future where in the wake of natural disasters shipments of vital relief supplies can surpass broken bridges, flood waters, and obstructed roads and directly reach people in need. Lab results and life-saving organs can be expedited over congested traffic, reaching the hospital in time. The panic over ordering gifts by a certain date to have them arrive by a certain day will be nonexistent. Now, let imagination become reality: this distant future is in fact right around the corner with drone shipping.

Moving beyond ground transportation and even planes, delivery drones are making a headway into the world of shipping. According to marketwatch.com, drone technology for shipping is confirmed but has not yet been made mainstream. However, it is only a matter of time before this technology will alter the terrain of the shipping industry forever. Here in Canada, companies like Drone Technology Canada are working hard to develop drones that will be used for commercial shipping. Down in the United States companies are merely awaiting FAA approval for commercial drone use by the end of 2016.

Unfettered by rush hour, road construction, or human error, drones will soar above the grid and head directly to its destination. Drones will undoubtedly respond to the market's growing demand for more diverse and expedient shipping options. We are already seeing the market respond to customers' desire to receive products more quickly. For example, big online retailers like Amazon.com are pioneering the concept of lightning fast delivery with Amazon Prime Now, which offers their subscribers two-hour delivery for select retail items. This delivery option still uses ground transportation and is available only in select cities in the United States but it is quickly changing the expectations of online consumers. The success of Amazon Prime Now and Amazon's intention to expand the service is telling of the direction the shipping industry is going, and drones will likely respond to this demand.
